Our favorites to win the London Design Museum awards

Seeing the full line up of the London Design Museum awards nominees, made your jaw drop didn't it? I thought I saw some drool.

Let's see Tirvani's favorites for winning the London Design Museum award in the category of fashion.

1. DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE'S WEDDING DRESS
SARAH BURTON FOR ALEXANDER MCQUEEN, LONDON, UK

We're (of course) starting with our favorite and the one we think has the bast chance of winning.

The Duchess of Cambridge's dress is a mix of old and new. Made by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, it is modeled after Grace Kelly's wedding dress. See more on it here.

2. ALEXANDER MCQUEEN: SAVAGE BEAUTY, METROPOLITAN MUSEUM IN NEW YORK, USA
ANDREW BOLTON, CURATOR

Alexander McQueen... Is there more to say? The brand's name is synonymous with unique but not outlandish fashion; classic yet different.

The collection Savage Beauty is a cross between the wild, fiercely independent side of a woman and her lady-like counterpart.

3. CÉLINE AUTUMN/ WINTER '11
PHOEBE PHILO AT CÉLINE, PARIS, FRANCE

Gorgeous, right? Céline's autumn/winter '11 line gave us a whole new way of looking at clean. With stark contrast and bold lines, these outfits definitely yell "Look at me!"

Opera, here we went

Oh the Opera.
an art form synonymous with pompous aristocrats... but at least they're wearing pretty clothes!

Our class (awhile ago but still) partook in this long time honored tradition and attended a performance of Carmen at the San Francisco Opera house. And my were we looking fabulous.

As for the spinning flowy dress (actually it's a skirt, "the girl" is pretty short...), talk about a spinning hipster hippie.

And yes, the last three pictures of the same pair of shoes was very necessary for those shoes are so motherfreaking gorgeous, especially in person.

And beyond how good we were looking, there were some pretty feisty outfits from other people. Actually, this performance of Carmen was mainly for high school students, to get us to begin to appreciate opera. Among favorite looks that I saw were a rainbow cloak (yes, a cloak), fur coats, and completely extravagant evening dresses. There was also many, many a cape.

The actual opera performance of Carmen was pretty good. Sure it was in French, but there were supertitles. Different from subtitles. Google it. There's a difference.

Believe me.

VMA recap 2011: part 3

Many many thanks to K, who willingly volunteered to offer his thoughts on the VMAs. Enjoy enjoy enjoy!

me: Clearly I had to start off with Beyoncé. Because as we all know I’m in love with her. Like, I would turn lesbian for Beyoncé.
K: Yes, she's quite an advocate for female empowerment.
me: That’s what you think went you think Beyoncé?
K: Ha-ha. What am I suppose to think?
me: Well clearly!! She’s gorgeous, has a great sense of style, is in a power couple that would, could, and should rule the world, aaaand she’s preggers and she still looks fabulous. Did you not see her performance? When I’m preggers, there’s no way I’m gonna be busting my derriere on the dance floor...
Example A: Look at her earrings in that picture!!
  Example B: Look at her! She’s be-yoo-tiful!
Example C: She can freaking dance.
Surely you admit she beyond amazing!
K: Yes, she's considered beautiful by the general populous. Not to mention her wonderful sense of fashion.
me: I mean look, when I’m preggers, I wanna wear a fancy dress and still feel beautiful. she’s like Heidi Klum when she was pregnant. still GORGEOUS. It’s not even fair...
K: She looks quite good, for someone who's having a baby soon.
me: Quite good?!?!? She looks freaking fabulous. Let’s be honest. But on the other end of the spectrum... those inevitable hot messes.

me: We have Nicki Minaj. Why in heaven’s name? Literally, a black Lady Gaga... that can rap. So.. black.
K: Yes, that polygon suit isn't working well for her.
me: Most definitely not her color(s). A hot mess Nicki... I mean, bravo for originality… but there is some logical limit.
K: Yes, well, it's certainly quite creative.
me: I am though, rather a fan of that one red shoe... rather a fuzzy slipper. It’s like a red furry duck!! On your foot. Just one foot..
K: Ah, yes, I'm sure it has a good reason to not have its partner there.
me: Look at this comment someone left on the picture: “It looks like someone pooped a rainbow over her!” Too true... too true. Now Nicki Minaj may try, but there is no more out there than Lady Gaga. Meat dress, anyone?

K: Now who is this?
me: Anyone else notice the “gag” in “Gaga”? She’s her alter ego, Jo Calderone.

(Pause)

me: I know I know. Let it sink in.
K: Ah, I thought she was trying to dispel the rumors of her being a man.
me: Probably… Now I have a serious question for you. How did Katy Perry get nominated for like... 10 different awards? What has she done that deserves that?! Confusion.

K: Ah, how many did she win?
me: Excuse me, 9 VMA nominations. She freaking won video of the year for “Firework”. That video was not good. She had fireworks coming out of her boobs. Certainly not good enough to win Video of the Year. And to top it all off—Katy and Kanye won best collaboration for freaking “ET”. Is MTV kidding me?! That song was not excellent.
K: And the whole alien thing was quite off-putting.
me: Off-putting? it was just plain weird.
K: Lady Gaga weird.
me: But good for Beyoncé winning “Best Choreography”. “Run the World”. That dancing was beautiful. Brought tears to my eyes.
K: Ah, yes, once again advocating for female empowerment.
me: I do agree with that statement in this case. Beyoncé freaking rocks. now Adele did pretty well for herself at the VMAs in terms of wins...

me: Although I don’t understand rolling the deep video. did u watch the Kingsley video about rolling in the deep?
K: Kingsley? No, what's the synopsis?
me: Basically him ranting about "Rolling in the Deep". the most hilarious crap I’ve ever watched in my life.

K: Ah, noted. I'll be sure to check it out some time.
me: Question (though you may not know the answer)... has not Joe Jonas gotten more attractive?

K: Ehh, about the same in my opinion.
me: No but I’m serious... he has definitely gotten more attractive. maybe it’s the hair. And the fact that I am totally crushing on his blazer..
K: Well, he's been beaten by Justin Bieber for his main audience.
me: Oh dear lord Justin Bieber... I can’t even. No. Pass. I don’t wanna talk about him. I really just don’t appreciate him that much. And you know what’s freaking hilarious?
K: What?
me: This.

K: I think her infamy is a bit overrated. I mean, I hold her to the same level as about Justin Bieber, or even the Jonas Brothers.
me: I mean.. did you not see her in the "Last Friday Night" video? She was jamming.
K: Oh, yes, I saw that.
me: Was not she be-yoo-tiful?
K: Yes, I'm sure there are some strange kids out there that think so.
me: Those like the aliens that were in ET...
K: Ah, yes yes.
me: But you know honestly. She doesn’t look too bad. But still.. she’s still Rebecca Black.
K: True, true.
me: And SHOCKER (for those Big Brother fans...) I just wanna close with Beyoncé.

me: I want her jacket. I would wear it around America and just call myself Beyoncé for a day
K: And I'm sure everyone would believe it was her.
me: Of course. I got the ego of Beyoncé. I’m serious. “Ego” by Beyoncé is legit one of my fave songs.

me: Alrighty then buddy boo.
K: Ha-ha
me: Let’s wrap this thing up.
K: Thanks for the name…
me: I really think that’ll be your permanent nickname...
K: xP

European flare!

Europe is full of fun fabulous style! Traveling from France to London was an amazing adventure. I know it might seem crazy, especially since they are both considered HUGE fashion cities of the world (both for different reasons) but both cities differed when it came to personal style. France, always being a country for its dramatic flair, was very sophisticated and elegant. Walking down the streets of Paris, the women stuck to pantsuits, sweats with slim khakis, and (when cold) big wool coats.

Even the men, seen strolling down with murices (man purses) down the street, dressed in nice linen pants and a tie, exuded that french flair! A night out in Paris is very different than one in the United States where you just put on jeans, maybe some uggs or boots, and a cute scarf. I'd see these women dressed in beautiful gowns, ranging from short lengths to long with the highest heels, in restaurants.

To say the least, France was magnifique when it came to fashion! England on the other hand is known for its street style, the comfy shirt, the jeans, and the crazy hair! I was taken for a throwback walking through Heathrow airport after just arriving from France. England was fashionable, in a way that differed from Paris extremely! Different from the stylish Parisian men, English blokes (notice my british slang!) would wear jeans and a formfitting shirt, even some had mohawks! The women would typically dress with mini skirts, tube tops, and the occasional high heel boot.

Although their fashion was nowhere as near as the French in sophistication and elegance, it had a funky twist which was cool and fun!

The day of independence... take 2!

While yesterday was the day of fireworks here in the US of A, the red white and blue theme lives on. T channeled a bit of this patriotic spirit with her red, white, and blue ensemble... Of course, the day after.

The white is the shirt, the blue the shorts, and the red the shoes. Classy, huh?

Fashion-ista it up

OH FASHION. Shoes, Hair Accesorries, dresses, tops, jackets, pants. All amazing finds! But the most important part of fashion is styling yourself, being unique in your own way. Whether your style is indie-vintage, preppy, or boho, styling your outfits is a true sense of self.

First of all, NEVER follow the status-quo, dress yourself how you like too. Don't be afraid of others judging you, go crazy! Life is full of chances, and fashion is definitely one of them. Shop at your fave stores, and look for bargains.
*A helpful tip: Instead of buying one really expensive item of clothing, go on a splurge and buy an array of different clothes! For more expensive items go to: modcloth.com or American Apparel, if you like to be on the cheaper side, Forever 21 Vintage and H&M are amazing brands while being on the cheap side of the price tag.

Needless to say, GO ALL OUT. BE CRAZY. EXPRESS YOURSELF. But make SURE you have the perfect outfit, while it is okay to lounge in sweats and a zip up over the weekend, whenever you go out, make sure you look your best! After all, 1st impressions are everything darling!
*Helpful tip: To dress down an outfit- Add a piece of more casual clothing, such as a big comfy sweater or a chunky necklace with dress. Or you can add a pair of funky colored tights to a a fancy dress. To dress things down- always add a baggy sweater or a chunky necklace. This gives it a casual theme while still making it CLASSY :)

Last Tip: Remember, don't mismatch a lot of things, but do a few so you can keep it interesting. If you wear all one color, it probably isn't the BEST choice. Mix-n-match isn't a bad thing, but know when to stop. Also, just choose a few accesories, because if you have too many you will look WAYYY to busy.

GOOD LUCK!
